General Techniques

With a touch of Glitter Masking thrown in for good measure!

(for additional information about glitter masking, please click here)

The following are all suitable for these techniques:

  • Velvet Glitter or Ultrafine Glitter
  • Flocking
  • Sparkle N SoftÔĽŅ

Did you know that you can stamp directly on top of glitter and flocking?  The technique opens up a whole new sparkly and/or fuzzy world, setting your projects apart from the "mundane".  The glitters work best if they are a light color. SNS semi-transparent glitters work great. For a slightly different appearance, light-colored opaque glitters will also do the trick.  Our new velvet glitters with their velvety finish are also especially suited with the coloring techniques, providing a slightly different texture and look. They all provide that special texture and look paper crafters are constantly on the look-out for.

How to do it?  Easy Peasy

  • Take a sheet of Super Adhesive Sheet (SAS02) - remove the protective backing off one side (preferably the paper-like side) and save that(for the¬†Glitter Masking¬†technique).
  • Lay the sticky side down on a piece of cardstock.

  • Use die cuts (or just trim to square or rectangle size needed) for the shape you want for your background

  • Peel the other remaining protective layer off (save that for the¬†Glitter¬†Masking¬†technique)

  • From the original protective covering that you removed (the paper-like side) - scribble over the non-glossy side and punch out an oval.
  • Place the oval (glossy side down) onto the die cut.
  • Add glitter to the exposed areas of your die cut. In this case, it's the purple glitter shown below. Rub in well with your fingers.
  • Brush off any excess.

  • Peel off the mask and cover the masked area with a lighter glitter color and rub in well with your fingers.

  • Stamp your image in the center with Staz-On Ink or with Memento Ink. Please remember that Copics and other Solvent Markers don't play well with Staz-On, but are friendly to Memento Inks. Therefore if you are going to color the glitter with markers, the type of ink you are stamping with makes a difference. If no Copic or Solvent markers are being used, Staz-on is fine. But if Copic markers are used, please stamp with Memento Ink.

You can also do the same technique using flocking....

NOTE:  You can do this technique using any of the various sizes of Tear-ific Tape - here's an example using the 2 1/2" Tear-ific Tape (SAT11).

Shown Above: Start the same way by placing the tape sticky-side-down onto your cardstock base.

Shown Below: Apply the protective covering only from a die cut to the now sticky cardstock base.

Shown Below: Spoon on (red) glitter to the areas not masked by the protective covering. Carefully rub circularly so that all the red remains in the background area. This technique is called "burnishing the glitter".  Tap off excess. Then remove the protective (mask) covering, applying the lighter color glitter, burnishing again. Tap off excess.

The sample below was created with Ultrafine Glitters, but Velvet Glitters may also be used, producing different textures. Masking shapes and punched borders creates an interesting background. Image was stamped with Memento Ink and colored with Copics.ÔĽŅ¬† (Please be sure that the stamped image has completely dried before coloring it to prevent smudges.)

After coloring your image, it may be further embellished by applying Dimensional Glue in appropriate areas and adding glitter or flocking, creating more dimension.
