Embossing on Leaves, Silk Florals, or Punched Out Items

by Shona Erlenborn

Whether they are real live leaves, or silk, try embossing them.  Smooth on pigment ink (ink which contains glycerine like VersaColor or VersaMark) by doing one of the following:

1. Smoosh pad over the leaves, or press leaves with fingertips, into the pad.

2. "Paint" or smoosh pigment reinker on leaves.

3. "Paint" a very light coating of SNS Brushable Glue onto the leaves.

Next apply clear or any variety of EP colors to leaf or die cut, holding with tongs. Heat set the EPs.

More tips below!

Recycle old silk flowers, parts of silk flowers, dry flowers or leaves, or even punched out items:

We all have those silk floral arrangements which have become old or tired looking.  Using a VersaMarker, Dove Blender Pen, or VersaMark Watermark pad, and a little embossing powder, create fun new projects and embellishments.

First, take apart the silk flower.  Using a soft cloth, gently remove the dust and "other grime" (which none of us ever has in hidden places of our homes) from each layer of the silk flower.  Either draw with one of the above markers, or smoosh with a VersMark pad to cover the silk flower.  Next dredge the flower with embossing powder of your choice.  Extra Thick EP or regular EP is ideal for this project. Feel free to emboss with multiple layers of the same color, or add other colors as you go.

Transparent clear EPs will allow the original integrity of the flower color to show through.  The semi transparent colored embossing powders will slightly change the hue of the silk under it.  Embossing powders which contain glitter will also present a "fantasy affair" for the flower.

Embossed flowers may be reused as cute little arrangements once they are put back together, or placed on gift packages in place of bows.  Use them layered or solo, with jewels or without on cards or scrapbook pages.

NOTE: When embossing with multiple layers of different color embossing powders, be careful not to overheat because the metallic colors will always rise to the surface, hiding all the other colors.

Faux Silk Background

Materials:

  • Tissue paper
  • SNS Ornament and/or Brushable glue
  • Markers
  • Stazon ink
  • Any image
  • Paint brush
  • Card stock or background paper

Directions

  • Stamp image or images on tissue paper with Stazon ink.
  • Color with markers.
  • Place tissue paper on card stock and brush glue on to the tissue paper so that it covers entire piece of the card stock underneath. Do not work the glue too much or it could make the mark’s ink run.
  • Let dry. Drying time will vary on amount of glue you use.
  • Trim tissue paper and mount to a card.

This technique can be used as a back ground or for a central image. I have found that a combination of the ornament glue and brushable glue works best. First use ornament glue, since it is a thinner glue it seeps through the tissue paper better. Then when that is dry apply the brushable glue to give it a glossy finish. If you chose just to use the brushable glue be careful when applying it tends to rip the tissue paper. Also try adding glitter before the glue dries to give the background an extra sparkle.
