Spritzed Watercolor

by April Williams on April 2, 2012

First of all I want to wish everyone a Happy Easter. It has been so beautiful in our area. Welcome back to Technique Tuesday. I hope you will enjoy the techniques that I am showing today. I will actually be showing 2 techniques that I used on this card.

Supplies:

  1. water spritzer
  2. various flower, leaf, butterfly stamps
  3. light pigment ink ( I used light blue )
  4. large shadow stamp
  5. markers ( I used purple, aqua, and green )
  6. white or cream cardstock
  7. Versa Mark ink pad
  8. 3 different colors embossing powders ( I used Log Cabin, Cerulean Star and Winter Berry )

Stamp large shadow stamp inked with the blue pigment ink on white or cream cardstock.

Take your markers and color directly on the tulip stamp and then spritz the stamp lightly with water.

Stamp the stamp onto the blue inked background.

Continue to do this with the leaf and butterfly stamps, until your background is finished.

Next I stamped a different butterfly on the left of the card using Versa Mark ink and did the paint embossing technique.  After stamping the butterfly in Versa Mark ink, pour Log Cabin embossing powder over the top 1/3 of the butterfly. Then pour Cerulean Star embossing powder over the bottom right side of the butterfly and Winter Berry over the bottom left of the butterfly. Use a heat gun to heat the powder to bring the butterfly to the forefront.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you will play with these techniques to see how fun they are.

See you next week!

April

Kindness begets Kindness

by Donna Ellis on April 2, 2012

Hi! Today’s card is inspired by many of  our SNS customers who are always lavish with their Kindness toward us, at the Shoppe, On-Line, and at conventions.

We have learned that Kindness arrives in the most unexpected ways. It’s always fun spreading it around. Bringing a little kindness where it is least “deserved” seems to change many a situation, and at the very least, ourselves. Today’s VERY SIMPLE card is all about kindness using this fabulous SNS image.

This eye-catching card uses the March SNS Sketch. (Have you played in the Sketch Challenges yet? It’s a great way of making cards AND playing in a contest with an chance to win an incredible prize)

Dry Embossing on mirror cardstock always produces a WOW card. To make it even more spectacular, I took one additional skill-less step.

Using a sanding block, I lightly removed some of the finish from the embossed mirror cardstock. It is burnished with a bit more pressure on the detail-raised areas (bringing out the white base), and more lightly on the bold-raised areas (just enough to deglaze the mirror aspect, but leaving the color).

The Vintage Floral Punch Around the Page was used as the backdrop for “Your Kindness Is Appreciated” by SNS. It is heat embossed with the new Mulberry Tuscany Creamy Cosmic embossing powder.

Also used are Pink Sherbert and Lemonade dye inks, and VersaMark ink. Simple! To make a card like this one, please visit our gallery here.

Spring Hugs,

Donna

Technique Tuesday — Inked Acetate

by April Williams on March 26, 2012

Welcome back to Technique Tuesday. When I saw this technique I just had to try it! It is so pretty. This technique is perfect for butterfly and flower stamps.

Supplies:

  1. acetate sheet
  2. 3-4 colors of alcohol inks
  3. Jet Black Staz On ink pad
  4. applicator for inks with felt pad

Stamp images on acetate using Staz On ink being careful not to move the stamp on the acetate, because the ink will smear and not leave a clean image.

This is very important! Make sure you turn over the images and apply the alcohol inks on the back side. If not the ink will smear. Drop the lighter color ink on an edge of the applicator and pounce it over areas of the butterflies. Then add another color to another side of the applicator and pounce it over other areas. Keep doing this with your colors until all the butterflies are completely colored. I did not use any blending solution when applying my colors because I wanted the colors to be bright.

The ink dries very quickly. When all the butterflies are inked, cut them out  and use a heat gun to curl the wings a bit.  Be careful not to burn yourself.  I used a plier like tool to hold mine and don’t over heat. If you don’t like how the wings are shaping you can heat from the other side to bend it back in a different direction.

I hope you enjoyed the technique today. I had so much fun with this. I hope you do too. Thanks for stopping by.

Just Frame It

Just Frame It Project

by Julie Zippel
Hi Everybody!  We hope you all know how very much your visits are appreciated!

Using the same Sweet Briar Frame as I used on the recent blog hop scrapbook page, I created a really sweet home decor project.

For this project, I was inspired by some floral metal picture frames I already had in my house.  So, I thought, why not try to recreate that same look with the Sweet Briar Frame stamp?  Not only did it turn out great, but it was the perfect size for (full sized) wallet photos.  Perfect!

I stamped on actual metal.  I love working with this medium and stamping.  The look is so unique, the material so versatile, and to top it all off; it takes heat embossing so very well.  Lots of fun to work with.  If you’d like to see a couple more projects done with metal check out these samples of Embossing on Metal in the Tips & Techniques section of the SNS website.

For this project, I used basic craft metal that you can buy in most craft stores.  You’ll find that different stores sell different variations of this and you’ll find it in different parts of the store.  The metal I used came in squares, but you can also find it in larger sheets or rolls.  Normally, I don’t “back” the metal to work with it.  But for this project (after a lot of experimenting!), I found that backing it before stamping, embossing, & cutting out gave a much smoother look (& more substantial) to the finished piece.  This metal is fairly flexible so it can get “kinks” and mark fairly easily.  For some projects this wouldn’t matter.  But to retain the smooth look on this project, adding a backing helped resolve this problem.  (Another option would be to use a heavier gauge metal – I just happened to have this metal to work with.)

I experimented with both detail and regular silver embossing powders to see which gave me the best overall look and decided to use the regular.  Detail powder does exactly that, show details really well.  But I wanted a little bit more dimension (thickness) for this than detail powder gives.  (Side note: Super thick embossing powder would give even more dimension than the regular silver powder, but you’d lose most of the details on an image like this).

Full instructions for this project can be found on the SNS Art Gallery here. This turned out to be such a cute project.

I Hope you’ve enjoyed this project & perhaps will make one for yourself or someone you love!

Until next time,
***Julie***

Lets Make Flowers

by Marie Berquist on March 25, 2012

One of my favorite embellishments to add to a card or scrapbook page is flowers.  There are so many gorgeous ones available to purchase in all shapes and sizes.  I actually have a whole shelving unit full of jars of different flowers but there are always those times when nothing I have seems to work for my card.  Sound familiar?  Then it is time to make my own.   I wanted to share some very simple techniques to create some stunning flowers.

I recently made this flower using Peony 2 and Blossom 2 and Spellbinders Blossom 3 die.  I used watercolor paper and spritzed it with water so it was quite damp.  I added some subtle color to the paper by touching a damp baby wipe to a stamp pad and then touching it to the paper several times.  I repeated this with one or two other colors.  The colors will spread and if you spritz them, they will spread more and lighten.

Then I stamped the Peony 2 and Blossom 2 on top of this with pink.  Once the paper dried I cut out the flowers with the coordinating Blossom 3 dies.

I wanted a little more color on the edges so I sponged them with more pink.  I also added a little to the back edges of the flowers and then made cuts between each petal.

Using a thick foam pad and a large tipped stylus, I began to press down on each petal along the edge and working towards the center.

As you continue to work your way around, the petals will curl up toward the center.

Next, press down and make a circular motion right in the center, causing the petals to pull in around each other.

To put the flowers together, I used SNS Dimensional Glue and added pearls and buttons to the centers, though you can also poke a hole in the center and add a brad.  For the large pink flower I used one Peony 2 and two smaller Blossom 2’s.  For the smaller blue flower, I used two Blossom 2’s.  These stamps can be purchased together as part of Stamp Set 429 – Blossoms, which also includes even larger flower images.

These flowers are really fun to play with, trying different cardstocks and dies.  Sparkle N Sprinkle has more great flower and medallion images, along with Cut Files that work great.  You can also use just the dies and/or cut files and then color them with inks, stains, or watercolors before shaping them.  SNS’ Pearlescent Watercolors work great.  You can even get even more shaping and curling by working with them while they are still damp.

And, of course, don’t forget about adding glitter.  Simply brush each petal with SNS Brushable Glue and sprinkle with glitter.

Now remember those baby wipes you used?  Don’t throw these away.  You can add more ink to them, or simply save the ones you use when cleaning your stamps.  Allow them to dry and then use flower dies on them.

For these I used a small punch (using cardstock) to create the center and gathered a small flower die cut around it, using a small amount of SNS Dimensional Glue.  I continued to add one more small and two larger die cuts.

Here are a few others I have made using different dies.

I hope this has inspired you to try this.  Be warned, it can become addictive!!

Art Deco

by Karin on March 21, 2012

Hi Everyone,

I took inspiration for my card share today from the papers that I used.  I thought the design and colors were very Art Deco, so I used the stamp set by this very name (Art Deco 320).  I love the 1920′s look of the South Beach (1700-320M) stamp, so I went graphic in my interpretation.  I stamped it in Versamark (99702) and used Silver Detail Embossing Powder (EP257) to bring a glamorous look to the project.

I added two strips of 1/4″ Tear-iffic Tape (SAT01) coated in Sassy Silver glitter (G1050) down either side of of my center paper and I dove into my stash of flowers and was able to layer up one to match my card. The sentiment was stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black Ink (99604) and I also added a silver ribbon for even more wow.  If you want full card details, visit my gallery here.

Don’t forget that tomorrow is the Sparkle N Sprinkle Blog Hop :)  The fun starts right here!

Technique Tuesday — Acrylic Distress

by April Williams on March 19, 2012

Two weekends ago I was on a stamping retreat and my good friend, Susan, was doing this technique. I really liked it and I want to share it with you today.  It is called Acrylic Distress.

Supplies:

  1. white cardstock
  2. one or two colors of acrylic paint daubers
  3. embossing folder ( I used a paisley folder )
  4. sanding block
  5. darker ink than paint ( I used purple ink )
  6. finger sponge dauber

Using your acrylic paint dauber, spread the ink all over the cardstock.  Let dry.

Run painted piece through an embossing folder.

Lightly sand the raised embossed areas with the sanding block.

With a sponge finger dauber, sponge ink onto sanded areas, leaving some white showing here and there.

I also tried another piece using kraft cardstock and two colors of paint. Here is the result.

I hope you enjoy this technique as much as I do.  Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day!

April
