Embossing Powder

I want to share with you the ins and outs of all the products we sell here at Sparkle N Sprinkle. We are known for our embossing powders, so what better place to start. I think people are afraid of embossing because they are not comfortable with it. I hope you will try it again this week and find the joys of embossing! I will be featuring a different technique and card every day this week, so make sure to check back every day!

Embossing powder is a fast melting powder compound that can be applied to a smooth surface to create a raised image or configuration through the application of a mild source of heat. As a decorating medium, embossing powder can be used to add color and texture to several different types of surfaces, adding visual interest to the finished product.

Supplies Needed:

Cardstock

Versamark Ink Pad

Embossing Powder

Static Free Pouch

Rubber Stamp

Heat Gun

Coffee Filter

Directions:

1. Gently pat Static Free Pouch over the area of the cardstock you will be embossing on. This is a very important step. This gets rid of the static electricity that will hold stray pieces of embossing powder on the cardstock and not give you a clean image.

2. Ink up your stamp with Versamark ink and stamp on your cardstock. This is a sticky ink and will remain wet for a few minutes and will hold your embossing powder on the stamped image until heated. Sprinkle on your embossing powder and cover image, tap off excess into a coffee filter for easy clean up.

3. Use a heat gun to melt the embossing powder. The proper way to do this is to hold the heat gun about 1 – 1 1/2 inches above your cardstock and hold it there until the embossing powder starts to change or melt, when you see it change start moving your heat gun slowly moving it across the image until it is all melted. You can scorch your cardstock if you hold it too long in one place.

Note: A hair dryer will not work because it blows to strong and will blow off the embossing powder.

Here is a basic video to show how to emboss.

Here is a card using basic embossing. The Flower Medallion was inked with Versamark ink and stamped. Then I sprinkled it with Red Apple Detail Embossing Powder and heated. The verse was stamped also with Versamark and embossed with Native American Embossing Powder. You can find all the details of how to make this card here.

Happy Stamping,
